On November 22, around 80 limited licensed social workers braved the first huge snow storm of the year to participate in NASW-Michigan first Licensure Exam Institute, held at the Marriot Hotel in Pontiac. The seven hour course walked participants through key exam taking strategies, including covering content areas, test anxiety, what to expect on the test day, ethics, and more.
Additionally, participants left with a 300+ page exam guide, complete with a full sample test. Throughout the day, many sample questions were given to help acclimate the group to question formatting and how to best use ASWB’s Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs). Here is one sample question to test your knowledge:
Sample Question. When doing an assessment, a client reveals that he is frequently using cocaine. The social worker should FIRST: (answer on the bottom of this page)
- refer the client for substance abuse treatment
- explore the client's motivation for change
- provide services focusing on the client's immediate problems
- complete a biopsychosocial history
NASW-Michigan would like to send a special thanks to our Institute presenter, Dawn Apgar. Dawn Apgar has helped thousands of social workers across the country prepare for the examinations associated with all levels of licensure. She has been a trusted licensure resource to many NASW chapters across the country, including New Jersey, New York, Montana and most recently Michigan.
After the Institute, participants said:
“This is the third prep course I have taken, and I feel I learned more in the first hour of this course than the other two combined.”
“My anxiety level has decreased as I feel better equipped to take the test. The book was an invaluable resource as well.”’
“I left the prep class feeling confident, knowledgeable, and with a plan of action. GREAT instruction with good tone, pace, clarity, vocabulary, and respect for attendees.”
“Appreciated the honesty that the exam content does not always align with real world practice – very reassuring! Thank you for offering insight as to how to ‘work the exam’.”
A second institute is looking to be planned for the summer of 2016, so be on the lookout for details in the coming months.
